  5.     In a standoff between the center-left press and the
  6. conservative government of Prime Minister Constantine
  7. Mitsotakis, the editors of seven Greek newspapers went to jail
  8. last week for terms ranging from five to 10 months rather than
  9. comply with a new law prohibiting them from publishing
  10. statements from terrorists. The anti-terrorist legislation,
  11. which took effect last December, was precipitated in part by the
  12. 1989 assassination of Mitsotakis' son-in-law by the terrorist
  13. group known as November 17. The law's intent is to deny
  14. publicity to the organization, which regularly sends long-winded
  15. statements to newspapers.

  17.     The showdown began June 6, when Serafeim Fyntanidis,
  18. managing editor of the liberal daily Eleftherotypia, was
  19. arrested for publishing November 17's claim of responsibility
  20. for a series of bombings. Six papers followed suit the next day.
  21. Despite their incarceration in the Korydallos maximum-security
  22. prison, near Athens, the convicted editors continue to run their
  23. papers by phone. "The battle we started will not end here," says
  24. Fyntanidis. "We will continue -- in or out of prison."
